R103 looks ok to me for what we're doing , in fact it looks quite spot on and a bloody good price

theres a Norman one further on looks a bit too poncey , too frilly , i'd like to see what its based on if anything , could perhaps be later into Early Crusade with Eastern influence but not for us

the Byzantine R104 is spot on also for its intended use , its actually very well done too ( but not for us obviously )

RW103 is really nice and the style is exactly right, my only question is are you happy with 16 gauge? If I remember correctly 16 gauge =1.5mm, 14 gauge =1.9mm. Can someone confirm that, or correct me if I am wrong?

16 gauge (1.5mm) is probably OK (safe) for our use but it will dent up very easily and not last very well. (Do others agree with that comment?)

I am wondering how much he would charge to do a helm identical to RW103 but in 14 gauge?

http://www.simetric.co.uk/sigauge.htm seems to verify what Andrew is saying about gauge.

I think RW103 does look ok.

I can't remember what the best thickness' of helmets were but I *think* that 1.5 -2.0mm was acceptable. 1.5 being the minimum, 2.0 being the the top end.

I wonder though, if they are made from an inferior metal, which is often the case, would the 1.5mm be even weaker??

IMO; Only one way to find out and if I required another helmet then I would probably take the chance.

Not that NVG are to be abided by, but their minimum is 1.6mm

Hello,
Just to weigh in on steel weight.
I have found 16 gauge is good for a solid but not to heavy helm. It will dint but not a badly as an 18 gauge on will. If you want a solid heavy duty helm go for the 2mm 14gauge variety but they will still dint but not much.
It is also about the steel. I have used 16 gauge mild steel that is hard as nails and then the next sheet is softer. That is the luck with un hardened steel.
The only way is to find a trusted armourer and try it out.
for protection though your helm is only as good as its padding. sword onto helm onto head equals ouch.
