( move this if you need to )
you will need :
*canvas ( or similiar cloth ) enough to cover a sheild in one piece , not synthetic stuff , i actually use an old cotton bed sheet a few layers of paint and it toughens up remarkably .
** PVA glue and a cheap nasty throwaway brush to apply
*** some basic "matte" paint the colour you want your background to be and another cheap throwaway brush to apply ( water based enamels are good and cheap and dry quickly , team up with the others and between you get a variety of colours , pretty pointless if everyone buys a tin of the same blue , be sure to check the BT for colour options )
Ok step by step instructions to get you on your way to having the best home made shield you’ll ever own
1. draw out the outline of your kite shape directly onto the ply , make sure you maximize the width and height , make sure it comes to a neat point at the bottom and the curve at the top is even on both sides , make sure the apex of your curve is running along the entire length of your shield ( imagine it has a spine ) , be wary of the edge of your ply blank , too close to the edge and it is weak from the forming process , and too far in and you waste too much of the shield . This drawn outline will be the outer edge of the shield
Stand it up , stand behind it , look into a mirror or glass window , make sure you are happy with the shape and your skinny body behind it
2. get your cloth/canvas , I actually just use an old linen or cotton bed sheet you only need to glue about an inch or so over the line you’ve drawn , cover the drawn shape on your blank with glue , PVA is fine , dilute it a little (only a little ) to help it spread , be sure you’ve spread glue all the way to the edge place your canvas onto your blank , smooth it out with your hands , smooth out the wrinkles , be sure it has covered over your drawn line by at least an inch or so , any more than that is a waste of good canvas
3. leave it to dry , not in direct sun , the PVA shrinks from the heat , when its dry , if you like ( but you dont have to ) give it another coat of PVA to harden it ( CAUTION : this can cause some paints to come out with a glossy finish ) or you can glue another layer of cloth over the top again for extra strength , but remember more canvas adds weight , leave it to dry
4. now you have a shield blank with a piece of canvas glued to it in roughly the shape of a kite shield , now try to re-trace your original outline from before , this should follow your original line underneath the canvas ( don’t ask me how , but cos I use linen or cotton sheet I can usually see the original outline ) , you should now have the outline drawn on your canvas ,and about an inch of canvas outside this edge , give it a coat of paint in your base colour , paint right up to this outside edge line , avoid a white background , its been done to death by our group , but also remember that if you want to apply a design , some light colours will not go easily over dark colours so a light colour background and a contrasting dark colour for the design is a much easier option .
Or pre draw your design and paint a dark background around it , then apply the lighter colour design later to make it stand out
5. You can paint your design on now if you like , be sure to keep it away from the edge , you don’t want your dragons enormous penis hidden under the metal rim that you will apply later .
6. you’re more than half way there ( maybe this weekend ? ) , by the time you get here we just have to apply the metal edge , THEN we cut it out with the jigsaw and add some straps
7. ok , now you can trim away some excess of the ply to make it lighter to carry , its actually easier to apply the metal rim and peen the rivets too , but DO NOT cut out the shape all the way to the edge , we ONLY cut that out AFTER the metal rim has been appled , when you cut away the excess remember to leave a couple of inches of ply outside of the drawn outline ,,,,,,, Wanna know why ?
8. cos rivets are c*nts , and if its your first time working with them you are bound to drill a hole crookedly , which in turn means the rivet will go in crooked which means when its finished it will stick out the edge and look butt f*cking ugly .
When we drill the holes to apply the metal rim we must ensure we are drilling at the right angle , ( conforming to the curve of the shield so to speak , make sense ? )
9. other crap you will need to bring :
* a small piece of sheepskin , to make a pad for the back
** some appropriate leather straps for handles , not shit thin stuff , good thick belt leather
*** some small tacks , to apply a leather cover over your sheepskin pad ( i have enough leather for this )
TOOLS : , beer , hacksaws and spare blades ,beer , peening hammer , beer , electric drills and steel drill bits , beer , electric jigsaw
***** some leather glue for the pad , PVA will not work here
i will have metal here for about 4 x shields so first in best dressed , it cost $3 a metre and each shield takes about 2 and a 1/2 metres . I will also have the right size nails here which will need to be cut down by hand with the hacksaw , but is really easy to do.
if you really want you can nail or stitch on a leather rim over the metal rim at home
you will need to pay for the steel rim and the nails , i will have to buy enough nails to do everyones sheilds at once
NOTE ; dont bother rocking up here if you havent prepped the shield blank beforehand , i havent got time to wait for glue to dry or shapes to be drawn out , I'd rather be paintingf wargames figures .
The garage will be set up like a factory production line so we get them done in a good safe sensible order , PLEASE lets not waste the day .
ok questions ? |
Just reposting so it's easier to find later. |

Can anyone help me with some shield questions:
- Who has the BT book so I can check colours/designs?
- I'm having some trouble finding some metal trim. Does anyone know where to find this (whithout exhausting your own stash)?
- Are suitable rivets available or should I just use nails?
- Is a small shield boss (12cm) appropriate for the period and safe for training?
Cheers,
Dave |

1. we have a BT book ?
2. i have some steel rim here , i need to use it up so i can order some more . failing that , any sheet metal fabrication or welding place will sell you some or order it in
3. rivets are nice but expensive , no-one will notice if you use nails instead , i actually file off the grip as well so it looks like a rivet anyway
4. i like the boss on a kite sheild but like Jobbee said , it serves no purpose and your efforts are better saved for a round sheild wher eit an integral part of the shield
are you free Sunday ? , we can make your sheild if you have some of it done by the time you get here you'll finish it in a few hours and you can paint it at home |
